SAN FRANCISCO, CA. In 1989, Sixth Street in San Franciscos South-of-Market-Area was notorious as a roaming ground for drug dealers, crack addicts, and hookers. It is here where a group of local performing artists had the delusional idea of opening a black box theater inside the street-level storefront of a dilapidated SRO hotel. In 2004, after hundreds of shows, the hotel and the theater was torn down.

Twenty-one years later, in the same exact location, Bindlestiff Studio will open the doors to its brand new theater this coming Fall. Join us as we celebrate the artistry of live performance from those who have graced the stage of this little black box theater over the past two decades. Help us unmask a legacy at our 3rd Annual BINDLEBALL MASQUERADE taking place on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Bayanihan Community Center, 1010 Mission St. (at Sixth St.) in San Franciscos South-of-Market-Area. Doors will open at 7pm. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased online at: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/editevent.html?e_id=96928 or by contacting Susanna Yu at Susie@bindlestiffstudio.org.

Experience an evening of special live performances, delectable cuisine, and good spirits as Bindlestiff unveils plans for the opening of its new theater. Be a part of building a new legacy through participation in Bindlestiffs Adopt-A-Theater program. This fundraising event will also feature an auction of new works by local artist Dino Ignacio, and Lorna Chui Velascoz as well as music by the popular award winning DJ Sake One.

The only required attire for the Bindleball Masquerade will be a mask. No mask, you say? Bindlestiff Studio will precede this event by offering a series of mask-making workshops conducted by local artists to take place on Sundays February 21, March 7th, and March 14th at the Mint Mall. Suggested tuition fee is $15 to $25 sliding scale. For more information about workshop participation, please contact Dianne Chui at dianne@bindlestiffstudio.org.

piNoisepop Music Festival Co-Founders

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS:

Ogie Gonzales, co-Founder piNoisepop

Ogie Gonzales is one of the founders of the piNoisepop Asian American Music Festival. During the hardcore/punk underground era of the 1980s and early 1990s in Manila, Philippines, he co-founded, played, and recorded with the punk band V.O.D. (Valley of Death), whose songs can be heard on the album 'Where Do We Go From Here?' produced by the independent label, Twisted Red Cross. He is also an accomplished practitioner of indigenous music from the Philippines. Ogie and his brother Jesse immigrated to the United States in 1989, where he continued playing music. In 1995, Ogie started volunteering for San Francisco's theater group Teatro Ng Tanan, where he performed and composed musical scores for the stage, using both western and Philippine indigenous instruments. He also composed for Lorna Aquino Chui's one-woman show, 'Babae.' In 1997, he joined the experimental comedy troupe Tongue in A Mood, where he met and helped form the Bobby Banduria band, which combines traditional Philippine instruments like the banduria, laud, octavina, and violin with a pop/jazzy/funk rhythm section. Their lyrics and style are straight from Filipino Americana. Ogie has collaborated with numerous playwrights, poets, and musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area Filipino American community, as well as studying kulintang(an) under Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan. In 1998, Ogie, his brother Jesse Gonzales, and Tongue in A Mood's artistic director Allan Manalo, organized "piNoisepop," a continuing annual music festival to promote original Filipino American music. The festival makes its home at Bindlestiff Studio, an epicenter for Filipino American performing arts.

Jesse Gonzales, co-Founder piNoisepop

Jesus Perez Guillermo Gonzales was born and raised in Manila, Philippines and currently lives in San Francisco, California. He is the co-founder of the piNoisepop Asian American Music Fetival. Jesse's introduction to alternative and independent music came when he began listening to WXB102 FM, a radio station in Manila that played a lot of new wave, punk rock tunes from Europe, the United States, and from home grown bands. It was in the same time period that Jesse joined his brother Ogie in a punk/hardcore band called Valley of Death (V.O.D.). In June 1989, the band broke up and the Gonzales brothers migrated to the United States. In 1995, Jesse started volunteering with Teatro Ng Tanan (TNT), a nonprofit Filipino American theatre organization based in San Francisco that presents hands-on theater workshop combining indigenous traditions, community issues and holiday themes. In 1996, he volunteered to be one of the musicians for TNT's production of 'Panunuluyan: A Search For An Inn'. Through his involvement with TNT, Jesse met new friends, artists, and musicians in the community. It was also in San Francisco where he was exposed to the independent music and arts scene. In November 1998, Jesse and his brother founded the piNoisepop Filipino American/Asian American Music Festival. In September 2002, Jesse served on the music curatorial committee of Kearny Street Workshop's APAture, an annual arts festival presenting the work of emerging Asian Pacific American artists in San Francisco. In 2003, Jesse presented the SF Bay Guardian's 2003 Goldie Award to From Monument To Masses in the music category. Jesse currently plays bass for indie pop band, The Skyflakes.

Through understanding, supporting and adapting Manila's underground music culture, Jesse has the background, interests, and inspiration to keep the Filipino-American/Asian American independent art and music scene alive.

piNoisepop Music Festival

One of the few Asian/Filipino American music festivals in the country, piNoisepop recruits Asian/Filipino American bands from all over the U.S. to perform original music; focusing on bands that are willing to create and perform their own sound through the exploration and experimentation of various music genres, including rock, punk, hip-hop, jazz, indigenous, folk, and world music.

An idea of having Filipino American bands play in one venue was thought about during an Eraserheads show in Oakland back in 1998. The Eraserheads were the biggest alternative band in the Philippines and it was their first time playing the United States. Being supporters of the Philippine alternative scene, a group of friends (including Jesse and Ogie) went to the east bay to check out the show. While waiting in line to buy tickets, Jesse told Ogie of an idea of having a gathering of Filipino bands in one show. It was on the footsteps of the Henry J Kaiser Auditorium where the name"piNoisepop" was born. Having seen punk rock and indie rock shows in San Francisco and the East bay, Ogie and Jesse Gonzales have always craved about playing in a band again. Being a supporter of the San Francsico Noisepop festival, Jesse had an idea of having a Filipino Noisepop festival. The Festival derives its name from the merging of the slang term "pinoy" or "pinay," meaning Filipino man or woman; and "noise" which defines the spontaneous sound of our music, and add a big influence of the Noisepop festival, the word “piNoisepop” was born.

First on the agenda was to find a venue that would support the idea. With the help of friends who were also artists and musicians, the first piNoisepop meeting was held at Bindlestiff Studios. From this meeting, the organization and production team "Pulutan Productions" was created to run piNoisepop. Allan Manalo, actor, stand up comic, and manager of Bindlestiff Studios, gave Pulutan Productions a chance to have this event at the theatre. A press release or submissions to participate in the first piNoisepop was sent out. The circle of artists and friends at Bindlestiff Studios were so excited about this music event that they formed a band in order to play the music festival. A lot of demo packages from Filipino-American bands were received in the piNoisepop headquarters. "We had no idea that there are some fil-am bands out there."

Since its inception in 1998, the Festival has featured several bands, comedians, spoken word artists, dancers, and filmmakers. In three sold-out nights, the Festival features 20 bands, introducing a diverse array of Asian American artists to a broad audience, and helping young artists advance their careers. The Festival was originally conceived as a venue for Filipino American musicians in the Bay Area. In its second year, organizers were stunned to receive applications from Filipino American bands across the country who had heard of the Festival's extraordinary inaugural success. By the third year, the Festival had expanded to include bands from other Asian American communities and presentations in other disciplines. In 2002, the Festival led to a four-month national tour, introducing youth in different cities to the exciting experience of contemporary Asian American music. The goals of the Festival are to promote the Asian American contemporary music scene, to help aspiring musicians perform, and to help them further develop their artistic skills. The piNoisepop Festival helps to break down the barriers between Asian American musicians and an audience hungry to experience the richness of this under-promoted musical field.
